Once on this Island, a Caribbean retelling of Hans Christian Anderson's "The Little Mermaid," is a colorful musical tale of love, loss and redemption performed by a group of Caribbean peasants as they wait out a violent storm. The story they tell is of a young peasant girl, Ti Moune, who leaves her village in search of her lover, sent on a journey by the gods of her island to test the ultimate strength of her love. It is the peasants' version of what became of her, filtered through their faith and their imaginations.

Ti Moune, a poor, orphaned peasant girl who ventures to into the world of the wealthy "Grand Hommes" in search of her true love. She is very persistant, naive, dreamy, and hopeful; she always strives for what is out of her reach. She is used as a "test subject" for the Gods in the show. Her notable songs include "Waiting for Life," "Forever Yours," and "Ti Moune."
